New Albany Middle School Students have several opportunities each year to compete in academic competitions. Seventh and eighth grade students participate each year in the Mississippi Council of Teachers of Mathematics district math tournament. Tests are administered at NAMS to determine which students will proceed to the district tournament held at Northeast Community College. Two students from each grade represent the school.

Academic competitions are also available in the form of Geography and Spelling Bees. School level competitions are held each year to determine which students will represent NAMS at the district, state, and national levels. A NAMS student has participated in the Geography Bee at the state level each year. Several New Albany Middle School Students have been Union County Spelling Bee winners and placed at the Mid-South Spelling Bee.

Students in English and other classes participate in special writing competitions and various projects sponsored by local and state organizations throughout the school year. Two New Albany Middle School students from grades seven and eight participate in a Writing Workshop each summer.
